Alexander Dahl - Personal History

Alexander Dahl, a Pioneer settler of East Jordan Ward, Salt Lake County, Utah, was born August 11, 1831, in Frederikstad, Norway, the fourth child of Paul and Anna Marie Dahl. He lived with his parents on a Norwegian farm until he was eighteen years old. At that age he took up the carpenter's trade, and mastered it in five years.

Alexander was baptized September 26, 1852 as a convert to Mormonism (Brothers Dorius and Hogan were the missionaries who preached the Gospel to him) and was ordained to the office of Teacher in the Priesthood. As such he took a lively part in disseminating the principles of the Gospel among his relatives and others. At the time of his ordination, the Elders were imprisoned in Frederikstad, so the duty of preaching the Gospel rested upon the Saints. Brother Dahl, with others, took part with great interest.

In the fall of 1854, together with a small number of other Norwegian emigrants, he embarked for America, having joined the main body of emigrants from Scandinavia in Copenhagen, under the direction of EIder Peter 0. Hansen. But on its way to England, the steamer was forced by a terrific storm to seek shelter in the rock bound harbor of Mandel, Norway, where the company remained about a week. During that time many meetings were held and the brethren bore testimony of the Gospel to the inhabitants of that little town, with seemingly good effect.

The company, numbering 440 Scandinavian emigrants, left Liverpool, on board the ship James Nesmith, January, 1855, and reached New Orleans on February 23, 1855. From that city they continued their journey up the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers to Fort Leavenworth and Mormon Grove. While there, their camp was infested with the cholera and many of the emigrants died, among whom was Christian Dahl, a brother to Alexander. Christian's wife was named Helena, and she came with the emigrants to Utah.

In June, the company left Mormon Grove, under the direction of EIder Jacob P. Secrist, who died during the journey leaving his first assistant, Elder Noah T. Guyman, in charge of the company. EIder Guyman brought the company safely to Salt Lake City, arriving September 27, 1855.

Soren Dahl–Personal History

A personal history narrative by Soren Dahl:
I was born in Midvale, Utah, March 24, 1866. My father was Alexander Dahl and my mother was Ellen Yorgason. My oldest sister died when an infant. My oldest brother was Niels Paul. He died at fourteen. The next sister, Elizabeth, died when three years old. Then came Alexander. He was born March 18, 1864 and died in 1936. My next brother was David Theodore, born March 1872. The two other brothers were twins born in 1877. They were named Peter Clarence and James J. Peter died at the age of six months. Louise, my youngest sister was born in 1878 and died January, 1924.
My first recollection as a child was when I was about four years old. Father and his family with Uncle Sanders and his family, each rigged up two covered wagons for a trip to Sanpete to visit our relatives. It took us three days each way and we camped out at night. Father and Uncle Sanders married sisters. Uncle Sanders was a brother to Ellen Sanders Kimball, one of the three first women to come to Utah.

Edith Coreada Anderson–Personal History

A personal history narrative by Edith Coreada Anderson:

I was born at Parley's Park, Utah, December 28, 1870. I was the daughter of William Ove Andersen and Elsie Eriksen Andersen. Mother gave birth to ten children, eight girls and two boys. I was the third child. My half-sister Leva, was the only help Mother had at the time and she was only twelve years old. Father walked two miles in the snow to get a mid-wife when I was born.

Our house was made of logs. It had only two rooms, one room with flooring, and the other room had a dirt floor. We had a fireplace in one room and a small stove in the other room. Our beds were mattresses filled with straw.

Soren Dahl

Soren Dahl was born on Saturday, March 24, 1866 in Midvale, Utah.  His parents were Alexander Paulsen Dahl and Ellen Yorgenson.  He was the fifth of nine children.
He married Edith Coreada Anderson on Wednesday, June 27, 1900 at the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was 34 years old.  They had five children.
He died on Wednesday, September 18, 1957 in East Midvale, Utah.  He was buried on September 21, 1957 in the Murray Cemetery in Murray, Utah.  He was 91 years old.

Reta La Von Cundick

Reta La Von Cundick was born on January 30, 1903 in West Jordan, Utah.  Her parents were Charles Cundick and Zuretta Eliza Palmer.

She married Conrad Soren Dahl on October 20, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  The marriage ended in divorce.

She died on January 1, 1996 in Sandy, Utah and was buried January 4 in Sandy Cemetery, Sandy, Utah.

Reta Levon Cundick Dahl, 92, died Monday, January 1, 1996.

Born January 30, 1903, in West Jordan, Utah, to Zuretta Eliza Palmer and Charles Cundick. She was the fifth of 12 children. Married Conrad Soren Dahl on Oct. 20, 1927 in the Salt Lake Temple. Later divorced. Reta was a devoted mother and faithful member of the LDS Church. She served in a variety of callings including Sunday School teacher, ward chorister, Relief Society counselor, stake missionary, and Salt Lake Temple worker. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. With a deep and abiding love for music, she worked for Daynes Music and later for Day's Murray Music until her retirement.She is survived by four sons, Lowell (Ila) Dahl, Orem; Weston (Marilyn) Dahl, Layton; Wayne (Patty) Dahl, Draper; Brent (Susan) Dahl, Salt Lake City; and daughter, Marilyn (Robert) Hardcastle, American Fork; 27 grandchildren; 78 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister, Gladys (Richard) Carlisle; brother, Galen (Mazie) Cundick. She was preceded in death by daughter, Ila Dean Proctor, a grandson, and nine brothers and sisters.

The family expresses appreciation to the staff at Sandy Regional Health Center for their kind and loving care during Reta's failing years.

Funeral services 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 4, Goff Mortuary, 8090 So. State, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Interment, Sandy City Cemetery.

Conrad Soren Dahl

 

Conrad Soren Dahl was born on September 6, 1903 in Midvale, Utah.  His parents were Soren Dahl and Edith Coreada Anderson.

He married Reta La Von Cundick on October 20, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Their marriage ended in divorce.

He died on July 22, 1985 in Bountiful, Utah and was buried on July 26 in Sunset Gardens, Sandy, Utah.
