Alexander Paulsen Dahl was born on November 13, 1831 in Fredrikstad, Ostfold, Norway. He is the son of Paul Larsen Dahl and Anne Marie Anderson.
He emigrated to the United States in 1855.

He married Ellen Yorgason in 1859 in Spanish Fork, Utah.
He is the father of Soren Dahl.
He died on February 18, 1911 in Murray, Utah.
